Strong distortion in transformation groups
We discuss boundedness and distortion in transformation groups. We show that the groups Diff0(R) and Diff (Rn) have the strong distortion property, whenever 0 ≤ r ≤ ∞, r 6= n+ 1. This implies in particular that every abstract length function on these groups is bounded. With related techniques we show that, for M a closed manifold or homeomorphic to the interior of a compact manifold with bounda...
متن کاملConcordance Spaces, Higher Simple- Homotopy Theory, and Applications
While much is now known, through surgery theory, about the classification problem for manifolds of dimension at least five, information about the automorphism groups of such manifolds is as yet rather sparse. In fact, it seems that there is not a single closed manifold M of dimension greater than three for which the homotopy type of the automorphism space Diff(M), PL(M), or TOP(M) in the smooth...
متن کاملA new family in the stable homotopy groups of spheres
Let $p$ be a prime number greater than three. In this paper, we prove the existence of a new family of homotopy elements in the stable homotopy groups of spheres $pi_{ast}(S)$ which is represented by $h_nh_mtilde{beta}_{s+2}in {rm Ext}_A^{s+4, q[p^n+p^m+(s+2)p+(s+1)]+s}(mathbb{Z}_p,mathbb{Z}_p)$ up to nonzero scalar in the Adams spectral sequence, where $ngeq m+2>5$, $0leq sExt}_A^{s+2,q[(s+2)p...
متن کاملThe production of finite and nonfinite complement clauses by children with specific language impairment and their typically developing peers.
The purpose of this study was to explore whether 13 children with specific language impairment (SLI; ages 5;1-8;0 [years;months]) were as proficient as typically developing age- and vocabulary-matched children in the production of finite and nonfinite complement clauses. Preschool children with SLI have marked difficulties with verb-related morphology. However, very little is known about these ...
متن کاملMinicourse: The algebraic structure of diffeomorphism groups
Abstract. This course introduces classical and new results on the algebraic structure of the identity component of the diffeomorphism group Diff0(M) or homeomorphism group Homeo0(M) of a compact manifold. These groups are algebraically simple (no nontrivial normal subgroups) – for deep topological reasons due to Epstein, Mather, Thurston... but nevertheless have a very rich algebraic structure....
